I think I’ll start this post out by using one of Rich’s own articles from LinkedIn:
Our insurance agency uses the vanity number 757-INSURANCE to serve the local market area of Hampton Roads. My other business interests also utilize vanity numbers… some numbers are actually “THE” brand, like 1-800-FIX-HOMES.
That said, I was recently asked if vanity numbers are becoming irrelevant due to the fact that all phone numbers can be looked up in seconds using a smart phone? In other words, why does anybody need to remember your number if they can look it up instantly?
Indeed, it is true that smart phones are revolutionizing the way companies must market! Sometime in 2014, mobile traffic was heavier than desktop traffic and the percentage continues to grow. However, the fact that more and more people rely on their smartphone for their information and can reference phone numbers and business information INSTANTLY actually enhances the importance of vanity numbers for two reasons.
The first reason is, as a marketer, the last thing you want your customers doing is searching for you on Google or Yahoo. Once your customer, or potential customer, is searching for you on their mobile device then they are exposed to every competitor and every competitor’s offer and their search for your contact information may derail them to the last place you want them to go! The best case when your customer searches for you online is that they remember your business name, search for it accurately, your site and contact information are at the top of the search, and they click or call your business. But does that always happen? How many businesses have names similar to yours? How many of your customers cannot remember your business name… exactly? How many of your customers will look for you using generic terms… like “Plumber Atlanta Georgia” and then scroll through the results to find you… or jog their memory on who you are?
The second reason is that vanity numbers provide credibility. Vanity numbers make your company look established and large even if you are running it out of your home. When your potential customers see your listing in the search results with “1-800-RESTORE” or “1-855-PLUMBER” you stand out from all of your competitors who have just a bunch of numbers. By appearing more credible and therefore, reliable, the customer is more likely to call YOU.
As a business owner and marketer, you want to be the ONLY option your customers remember. If they can reach you without having to search for you, your business wins. In an era of overwhelming amounts of information and access to instant data anytime/anywhere, vanity numbers will continue to be an invaluable tool to separate your business from the competition. Take your business to the next level with an unforgettable vanity number.
